Tines: A Small Beowulf Cluster
"Tines" is a beowulf cluster I built while I was doing my PhD. A Beowulf cluster is an assembly of standard PCs. We applied for a research infrastructure block Grant (about $75,000 worth) in 2000. The name comes from the aliens found in Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep.
All 16 nodes have dual Pentium-II 450MHz processors, 4 gig hard disks and 512MB of RAM.
There is 1 master node with about 160 gig of hard disk space and a CD ROM that manages the other nodes.
Tines is still in operation, but will slowly be phased out. In 2004, we obtained a second RIBG grant to update Tines.
Things have moved on a bit since then. Although not finalised, the new nodes are likely to have 4 gig of RAM, 2 Xeon Extreme Edition or Opteron processors, and the storage box is likely to offer 1.5 terabytes (yes, that's 1500 gigabytes, kiddies).
You can see some pics of Tines here. |
